The Association of Motor Vehicle Dismantlers of Finland

The Association of Motor Vehicle Dismantlers of Finland,  S.A.L.ry. (Suomen Autopurkamoliitto ry.) was founded on 7th of August 1998 and it was registered at the same year on 28th of October.

The Association was founded to improve the operational preconditions in dismantling End-of-life Vehicles (ELV) and to develop the directions and standards as well as co-operation in the field.

S.A.L.ry. consists of
64 member companies and it belongs to EGARA ( European Group of Automotive Recycling Associations ) since 1999.

The Association of Motor Vehicle Dismantlers of Finland together with the dismantlers and recyclers tries to optimize the dismantling processes, educate the staff and minimize the usage of dangerous substances. The eldest members of the Association have been in business for five decades already. The members have well functioning customer services and their operating policies are modern and up to date. Several dismantlers have also specialized in particular to defined vehicles.

Vehicle Dismantling in Finland

The business idea of the professional dismantlers is to sell good quality recycled parts of End-of-Life Vehicles. The parts are acquired by dismantling out of use and crashed cars and other vehicles. Dismantling is carried out professionally and according to the environmental regulations.

Dismantling the vehicles is subject to permission and the performer has to hold a permission admitted by Finland’s environmental administration. On 2005 Finland started to admit environmental certifications to the members of S.A.L.ry. Many of the members are already certificated. The member dismantlers are the only collecting centres following the official directions for End-of-Life Vehicles. Only the member dismantlers recycle the used parts, sort out detrimental substances to be properly carried away and destroyed and take the scrap metal further to be refined.

The Law

According to the law the last owner of a vehicle is obliged to take it to an official collecting centre in the realm of product liability. He gets a certification to be certain that his vehicle is to be legally dismantled. This is to ensure that the vehicle is taken out of register finally and the owner is released from such payments as insurances and diesel tax etc. Giving a vehicle away to be recycled and taken out of register are totally cost free for the customer.

According to the EU ELV Directive at least 95% of the weight of an ELV is to be reused or reutilized from the year 2015. From 2006 on the reutilizing proportion is to be 85% at the minimum.
